Causes for vaginal pain

Many women would have experienced vaginal pain in their life. She might occasionally consider what might be the cause, but due to her shyness, she would not speak out about it. There may be many factors contributing to the causes for vaginal pain in women. But, in this blog, we see in detail about vaginismus and the factors contributing to it.

Vaginismus:

When you have vaginal pain during intercourse then you may have a chance of having vaginismus. Vaginal muscles in some women may contract involuntarily or repeatedly when they try vaginal penetration which is termed vaginismus. Sexual activity may become difficult or very painful due to contractions. Whereas, it doesn’t affect sexual arousal.

Factors contributing to vaginismus:

The factors contributing to vaginismus are as follows

  • Anxiety disorder
  • Prior pelvic surgery
  • Childbirth injuries like vaginal tears
  • Bladder infection(UTI) and yeast infections
  • Fear of sex or negative feelings about sex may be due to sexual abuse, rape, or trauma
  • Conditions like vaginal atrophy(vaginal lining becomes thinner and drier) and vulvar vestibulitis (pain around the outer part of the female genitals) cause Dyspareunia(the clinical term for painful sex).

Factors contributing to primary vaginismus:

When a woman experiences pain whenever anything, including a penis, enters her vagina is called primary vaginismus. Some of the factors contributing to primary vaginismus are

  • Chronic pain condition
  • Harm avoidance behavior
  • Strict conservative moral education belief
  • Negative emotional reaction toward sexual stimulation

Why do you get it?

Doctors are unsure of the precise cause of vaginismus. It is usually connected with anxiety or a fear of sexual activity. Yet, it’s not always clear whether the anxiousness or the vaginismus came first. Some women may have vaginismus.

  • Infection and dryness can also cause painful intercourse
  • In all situations with any object or with one partner and not others
  • Only with sexual intercourse but not with tampons or medical examination
  • So, it is important to understand the type and nature of vaginismus in the woman and help her in overcoming this distressing problem.

Risk factors:

Some of the risk factors of women having vaginismus are:

  • Sexual assault
  • Inflammation of vagina(Vaginitis)
  • Outside of the uterus, endometrial-like tissue develops(Endometriosis)
  • Prior episiotomy (Episiotomy is a little cut made during childbirth in the region between your vagina and anus).

To Conclude:

As a result, vaginismus is linked to both physiological and psychological factors, and appropriate treatment will be needed to relieve anxiety. Feel free to discuss your issues with your gynecologist and get proper treatment and lead a happy life.
